We DID That - Com Des 2024 Senior Showcase
	
CAUSE-BASED DESIGN · SPRING 2024

The College of Visual Arts &#38;amp; Design celebrates its Communication Design Class of 2024 with “We DID That”, an exhibition spotlighting the amazing work these students have done throughout the program.

 Our team of designers put together the show from conceptualization, planning, installation, and finally completion. The project scope included branding, marketing, exhibition design, layout design, videography and editing, budgeting, and installation.

My contributions to the project included managing the budget, designing the exhibition layout, and developing the final presentation. I documented the entire process, producing video documentation and a promotional hype video. 
Attracting over 350 attendees on reception day, the “We DID That” 2024 Senior Showcase was the College of Visual Arts &#38;amp; Design’s most attended exhibition.

Concept


Our concept centered on showcasing each student’s unique talents—whether in typography, illustration, or animation, etc. This diverse mix is brought to life through the show’s visual language, featuring a vibrant array of colors, textures, and shapes.

We conducted a survey among Communication Design seniors to determine the direction of the showcase, and "We DID That" received the majority vote. The survey, which measured interest on a scale of one to five, garnered responses from 46 students, with "We DID That" leading in popularity.

	Branding &#38;amp; Display Wall


We quickly solidified the branding to lay a strong foundation while designing the main display wall and other assets. The branding remained adaptable throughout the project, allowing us to make adjustments as needed. The final display wall featured an interactive design with 3D elements, a signature wall, and a photo opportunity.

Project Display
	

To showcase 40 students' work within a limited 966 feet of horizontal wall space, we designed six branded project templates as well as a template for digital projects. Each student could choose the template that best highlighted their unique portfolio.

Marketing &#38;amp; Communications
	

The showcase was promoted over three weeks across multiple channels. Event info and shareable email invites were sent to students and professors, a "behind-the-scenes" clip was posted on Instagram to reach students, alumni, and the public, and flyers were displayed throughout the CVAD building.

Branded email graphics with concise information on what and how to send files to the design team were sent out to students and professors to inform them about photo and project calls.

Takeaways


To fully commemorate the event, tote bags, stickers, and a zine-style yearbook was designed for students, parents, professors, and visitors to walk away with. The yearbook featured a brief introduction to the show, a thank-you note to the professors, students and their portraits, and a signature page. The yearbook unfolds into a full poster allowing for students to have a display piece as well as memorabilia.

Awards


At the showcase, selected students across all classifications receive scholarship awards for their hard work in the program. The award is designed and branded to match the rest of the show.

Deep Ellum is one of the most historically and culturally significant districts in Dallas, Texas. It was one of the first commercial districts for African-American communities, and it’s known for its art and entertainment venues. This photography and collage-based ad campaign aims to capture Deep Ellum’s rich and rough charm without perpetuating negative narratives of the neighborhood and its community. The project scope includes design and photoshop. 

By collaging imagery that can be found throughout the district itself, the ads reflect Deep Ellum as a melting pot of music, culture, and art while highlighting the community.&#38;nbsp;

Thorogood builds high quality, job-fitted footwear made to protect the wearer from hazardous conditions. This ad campaign is to showcase Thorogood’s variety of footwear and its ability to fit anyone’s needs. The project scope includes copywriting and photography.


The visual of boots imposed on animals is an unexpected combination that catches the attention of the audience immediately. The comparison made between Thorogood boots and an animal, conveys the boots’ ability to accommodate to anyone’s specific or specialized needs.

Kendrick Lamar is a rapper and songwriter widely regarded as one of the most influential rappers of his generation. This brochure is a type-based publication focused on visually communicating the energy and feel of Kendrick Lamar's album Mr. Morale &#38;amp; The Big Steppers. The project scope includes type-based design, typesetting, and book binding.


The album is a quiet yet heavy reflection of Lamar's personal struggles. This theme is reflected in the brochure with a careful balance between areas of white space and chunks of type and information.

Steinway &#38;amp; Sons is an established piano company known for its quality materials and craftsmanship. This publication celebrates Steinway &#38;amp; Sons long history of craftsmanship, artistry, and innovation. The project scope includes design, photography, typesetting, and book binding.

The booklet is to be given to Steinway owners to celebrate the company’s 170th year. It is a show of appreciation for the customer’s trust and dedication to Steinway &#38;amp; Sons. Gilded elements throughout the booklet reflect the gold standard of Steinways pianos.

JetBlue is a U.S. low-cost airline known for providing plenty of amenities for its passengers and its high customer satisfaction. This rebranding aims to elevate JetBlue to become a major competitor of U.S. airlines. The project scope includes design, photoshop, and copywriting. 

The rebrand pictures JetBlue as a breath of fresh air and new experiences through the inviting messaging and bright colors of the brand. The use of big, bold typography as visual elements speaks to the strong personality of the brand.

Communion is a restaurant and bar located in Seattle, Washington, known for its close community and delectable soul food. This rebranding highlights the warm, homey culture of the restaurant. The project scope includes design, photography, and copywriting.


The new logo reflects the sense of community brought together by great food and drinks, and the warm color palette highlights the warm food and culture of the restaurant.

Pandora Music is a music streaming service that started as the first online radio streaming service. Because Pandora’s services are limited to the United States only, they are missing the opportunity to appeal to a global audience. This project envisions a global festival organized by Pandora to expand its market globally as well as enter a new market of music festivals. The project scope includes design, photography, and copywriting.

The visual language takes inspiration from the wavy and groovy nature of music and sound, while making sure to maintain global appeal as well as accessibility. With 3 different color palettes associated with 3 different cities, the cities are differentiated from one another, and this provides opportunities for creating collectibles as incentives. This project scales Pandora up to compete as both a global music streaming service and a high-profile music festival.

Yongnuo is a photographic equipment manufacturer founded in 2006. The brand is relatively new to the photography market compared to its more established competitors. This rebranding and packaging design aims to visually elevate Yongnuo to a level of quality and sophistication beyond its competition. The project scope includes design and 3D modeling and rendering.


Yongnuo’s camera lenses provide a blank canvas in which photographers can bring their own color and style onto. This sentiment is reflected in the choice of white packaging.
